In 2019, the diesel engine in the Ram 2500/3500 changed to a hydraulic roller valvetrain. Although used for many years in the automotive industry, it has not made a good impression in terms of reliability in these hard-working trucks like its predecessor, which used a flat tappet style valvetrain.

This conversion kit replaces the problematic stock hydraulic roller lifters and camshaft with a more reliable flat tappet. This kit is a 49-state certified and is emission certified for all Ram 2019-2024 2500 and 3500 diesels, not in California. People have noticed quicker spool up and throttle response, fuel economy gains, and lower EGT, all on stock trucks with factory tuning and all emission equipment present.

Strength, durability, and precision are all hallmarks of the Hamilton Cams flat tappet conversion kit. Every component is engineered for maximum performance and reliability, from forged steel camshafts to DLC-coated tappets and robust pushrods. While the DLC coating is a big leap forward in reducing friction and extending component life, it can be damaged by using incorrect oil, improper lash, valve float, or metal contamination. Thin viscosity oils do not provide the required shear capabilities that flat tappets need; you must use 15w-40 oils in non-winter conditions or 5w-40 sub-zero temperatures. Oils with low zinc, phosphorus, and molybdenum do not provide the additive package required for flat tappets.

Valve lash that is too loose or can damage lifters or the DLC coating by increasing the impact when the lash goes to solid. Valve lash that is too tight will damage the coating as it does not allow sufficient oil film thickness to form before the next impact cycle. High RPMs amplify the impact of the camshaft on the tappet, which can break through the oil film above 4,000rpm. High RPMs and high spring pressures are not recommended for longevity’s sake, as there are not enough film strength and additives in emission-compliant oils to allow these extreme conditions. The film's strength is not adequate to keep the tappet and the cam separated in these cases where viscosity is too low, lash is too much, RPMs are too high, or spring pressure is too high. In this case, the DLC coating will break down into graphite and will start to decompose and delaminate from the coated parts. You must decide if you want longevity or to have fun; unfortunately, you can do both only for a short time. Make sure the lash is set to .010″/.020″ after 5 minutes of running, and after you retorque the head, please re-check. Finally, any wear metals from other failures that get into the non-filtered splash oil can kill the DLC coating in short order. Although this is a performance camshaft that is emission-compliant, think of it as a fix for stock or mild builds that do not exceed 4,000 RPMs and use factory valve springs.

Heavy-Duty Pushrods

Over 3500 Lbs.
